Firefighters responded to the area of 22 Appleton Street just before 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, according to a release from State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke conditions inside the rectory located a short distance away from St. Athanasius Church. The fire was coming from the basement and crews extinguished it quickly, the release said.

“There are few fire incidents more concerning than those that affect houses of worship,” said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey. “We want the community to know that we take this fire, and any fire at a place of worship, seriously.”

The clergy house is undergoing renovations, so no one was inside at the time of the fire, Ostroskey said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Arson Watch Reward Program Hotline at 1-800-682-9229 or Arlington Police at 781-316-3910.
